words to live by: whatever is lovely

Phillipians 4

I’m not one for resolutions. I never have been. I have always had an overwhelming sense of reality. For as long as I can remember I refused to make a resolution because I don’t think it’s a good idea to set yourself up for guaranteed failure. Seriously, these are thoughts that actually went through my mind as a fourth grader. But, over the last few years I have tried to pick a few things to think on for the upcoming year. Different from resolutions, these are areas that I would like to focus on, no pressure, no rules, just things that I would like to try and work on.

I hadn’t really come up with my thought for the year yet but I’ve been going through this study for a mom’s class I’m in and I came across this passage.

“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philipians 4:8

Call it being realistic, call it being honest but I am not quick to see the good in all things. I wouldn’t say I’m a pessimist or a complainer but I often notice when things are not ideal or when things could stand to improve. I have begun to realize that this is not a state of mind that promotes true joy and contentment. So I have decided to focus this year on finding whatever is lovely in all circumstances.

Rather than seeing my husbands jeans on the floor and being frustrated that things are not put away, being thankful that my husband is at home and healthy. Having a sink full of dirty dishes becomes gratefulness for the food to eat. Opening my curtains in the morning to see that it is still raining outside turns into excitement for the vibrant spring colors that are just around the corner!

I know that if I am intentional about incorporating this way of thinking into my daily life that it will truly be transforming! I’m excited to see what takes place!
